Privacy Policy
This covers two things: this website (foodexpirytracker.com) and the FreshScan: Food Expiration iPhone app. The short version: the site doesn't track you, and the app keeps your data on your iPhone.
This website
What we don't do
- No analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and no third-party cookies.
- No accounts, sign-ups, email lists or forms.
- Fonts and images are served from this site, not from third-party services.
The tools run in your browser
The expiration date decoder, Julian date converter, food expiration calculator and food waste calculator run entirely in your browser. What you type into them is not sent to us or stored. The food expiration calculator downloads the USDA food list from this site when you open it; that request doesn't include anything you type.
Browser storage
If you close the download bar at the bottom of the screen on a phone, the site remembers that for the rest of your visit using your browser's session storage. Nothing else is stored, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Hosting
The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel's servers process technical request data (such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested) to deliver the pages and protect against abuse. We don't use that data to identify or profile you. See Vercel's privacy policy.
Links to other sites
Download buttons go to Apple's App Store, and guides link to sources such as USDA and FDA. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
The FreshScan app
FreshScan does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal data. There is no account, no sign-in and no server operated by us. The app contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking software, and its privacy manifest declares no tracking and no collected data types.
Information stored on your iPhone
- The name, date, date type, optional value, status and timestamps for each item you save.
- The photo the app takes of a product when you scan it, and a small thumbnail.
- Your preferences, such as reminder timing, badge setting and date-format preference.
This stays in the app's private storage on your device. It is included in your own device backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup) if you use them; Apple handles those under Apple's terms, and we can't access them.
Camera and photos
The camera is used only to recognize the printed date and take a photo of the product. Recognition happens on the device with Apple's built-in text recognition; no camera frames or photos are uploaded. Choosing an existing photo uses Apple's system photo picker, which doesn't give the app access to your photo library.
Notifications
Reminders are local notifications scheduled by the app on your iPhone. No push notification service or server is involved. You can turn them off in the app or in iOS Settings.
Purchases
FreshScan Pro is an optional auto-renewable subscription sold through the App Store. Apple processes payment and manages the subscription; the app only receives confirmation that a subscription is active. We never see your name, payment details or Apple ID.
Network access
The app works offline. Its only network activity is Apple's StoreKit framework talking to the App Store to load subscription prices and verify purchases.
Deleting your data
In the app, Settings → Delete All Data removes every item, photo, reminder and preference immediately. Deleting the app removes everything it stored. We hold no copy, so there is nothing to delete on our side.
Children
Neither the website nor the app is directed at children under 13, and neither knowingly collects information from anyone.
Changes
If the site or app changes in a way that affects your privacy, this page will be updated and the date below changed.
